It can be easy to overlook your mental well-being and lack self-care as an entrepreneur who is focused on building your business and juggling all of that life stuff.
But here’s the cold, hard truth from ya girl – who also happens to run a social media management biz and is a busy mom.
It’s impossible to pour from an empty cup. Cliche, I know, but if you don’t take care of yourself, it’s gonna catch up to you.
In honor of National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, I’m sharing my favorite ways to make sure you’re not skipping out on your mental health as a modern-day entrepreneur.
Self-Care Tips
We feel so much pressure to succeed. When there are deadlines to meet, income ceilings to break through, and marketing to do, it can feel impossible to manage it all.
But you are only setting yourself up for failure when you don’t take time for yourself. Remember: your bottom line is important, yet it means nothing if your mental health is suffering.
Try one (or all) of these self-care tips!
Set Boundaries
The word “yes” is often a knee-jerk reaction. You want your customers to have a great experience with you, and you’re always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that happens.
But at what expense? If your mental health is on the line, you’re allowed to say no. After all, you’re an entrepreneur. Of course, you get to make all of the rules so you can live your best life.
Journal & Reflect
When you are running on auto-pilot through jam-packed days and endless tasks that keep your mind busy, it’s easy to lose touch with your thoughts and feelings.
Take time daily (even if it’s just five minutes) to journal and reflect.
Get it allllll out of your brain and onto paper. This will help you tap into your thoughts and navigate your emotions. And hey – it might even give you clarity that’s been hiding under all of the stress.
Quit Doom-Scrolling & Get Some Sleep
Trust, I get it. After a long day of catering to everyone else – the kids, your customers, your SO – all you want to do is scroll IG and rot on the couch. There’s just something about a good, long doom-scrolling sesh that helps you decompress.
But if you’re sacrificing your precious sleep because you can’t put the phone down, it’s a little bit of a problem, boo. I’m not throwing shade; I’m just calling you out with some tough love because I’ve been there and done that.
Set a timer, lock your phone, and do whatever it takes to ensure you get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Move Your Body
Get up and moving – especially if you work from home or sit behind a desk for the majority of the day. This doesn’t have to be anything crazy or time-consuming. You don’t need to commit to a workout program that requires you to exercise twice a day for 45 minutes.
Take a 15-minute walk, hit the yoga mat, or host a damn dance party with you and your dog in the living room. You’ll release your stress, boost your serotonin, and feel like a million bucks.
Build a Supportive Professional Network
Building a successful business takes a village. You shouldn’t do it alone!
Connect with other women, BIPOC, or LGBTQ business owners who are on the same journey as you. They know what you’re going through and will be there to lift you up when sh*t gets tough.
Seek Professional Help
There is absolutely zero shame in reaching out for help if you are struggling.
Here are several powerful resources that can direct you toward the support you need.
Take a Step Back
Raise your hand if you find yourself working WAY more than you did when you worked a traditional 9-5. #guilty?
It’s okay to take a step back and focus more on self-care when you feel like you’re taking on too much. You’re allowed to put a pin in a project or outsource tasks if you are constantly overwhelmed and feel like your to-do list is never-ending.
